1934 Avions Voisin C27 Aerosport

1934 Avions Voisin C27 Aerosport

Unlike the first C27 chassis that was bodied by Figoni, the featured second C27 followed tradition and sported a coupe body constructed by the works. As had become the norm the design was the combined work of Gabriel Voisin and designer Andre Noël-Noël Telmont, who was an architect by trade and met Voisin during their study. Not only did Noël-Noël help design the two-door coupe, he was also the first owner. Not to be confused with the later C28, this C27 coupe also received the 'Aerosport' moniker.

The C25 'Aerodyne' cleary formed the basis for the smaller and lower C27 coupe and its prominent feature, the sliding roof, was carried over. Thanks to its round shape the entire roof can slide back behind the passenger compartment. The roof system is powered by a separate engine located behind the passenger's seat. The round shapes are quite contrasted by the square doors that open sport piano hinges. The nose prominently features one of Voisin's trademark cues; the support struts for the delicate, lightweght front fenders.

It is no surprise that the inside of the Voisin is filled with unusual items as well. The most obvious is no doubt the upholstery that uses a particular geometric shape that was used in different colours for many Voisin models of the day. The dashboard is filled with a plethora of dials and knobs to control advanced features like the adjustable shock absorbers and the electro magnetic overdrive on both of the two speed in the gearbox. Although the C27 Aerosport is a fully functional car, it is true work of art.

After the car was shown at the 1935 Geneva Motorshow, the unique Voisin was owned for over ten years by Noël-Noël. He then sold it to a befriended painter, who later sold it to one of the founders of Renault Sport. The C27 eventually ended up in the hands of marque expert Saliot Garage. Today its owned by a French Voisin enthusiast who brought it out for the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where Voisin was the featured marque. Possibly for the first time ever, it was lined up alongside the only other C27 ever constructed.
