1937 Bentley Petersen 3.5-litre Torpedo Roadster

The stunning "special" based on the Derby Bentley presented here is a product of Petersen Engineering, a company that has established an unparalleled reputation for its work in reconstructing and restoring Bentley motor cars. Over the past 25 years, the company has built more than 60 "Petersen Specials" - classic conversions built using spare parts and measurements from the 1920s. Therefore, Petersen cars allow enthusiasts to enjoy the experience of the "Vintage Bentley" with the added benefits of more modern technologies and improved materials.

Although the acquisition of Rolls-Royce Bentley Motors in 1931 robbed the name of its independence, it at least ensured the survival of the Bentley name. Launched in 1933, the first of what became known as the "Derby" Bentleys continued the marque's sporting associations, but in a more refined manner than before. Even W O Bentley himself acknowledged that the 3.5-liter model was the best to bear his name.

Based on the contemporary Rolls-Royce 20/25, the 3.5-liter Bentley was slightly shorter in wheelbase by 10'6" and used a tuned (115 bhp), twin-carbureted version of the former 3,669cc six-cylinder engine. Add to this already excellent package a four-speed gearbox and servo-assisted brakes, and the result is a car that offers the driver effortless high performance in almost absolute silence. There were few peers to the 'Silent Sports Car,' as it quickly became known, as a tireless long-distance tourer, combining traditional Rolls-Royce refinement with Bentley handling.
