1924 Fiat 519S Torpedo Sport Speciale Convertible by Bertone
The Fiat 519 was powered by an overhead valve six-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed gearbox, with hydraulically assisted drum brakes on all four wheels. The 4766cc 6-cylinder engine was fitted with a Single Updraft Carburetor and delivered 70 horsepower at 2,600 RPM. Production of the Fiat 519 was produced from 1922 and 1927 in four-door sedan, four-door limousine, and four-door cabriolet body styles. Total production reached 2,411 examples. Currently there are fewer than 25 examples known to exist.
This Fiat 519S is a short-wheelbase Torpedo Sport Speciale that was discovered in an Australian barn in 2001. It was acquired by Hans Compter and at the time much of its original rear body section had been cut away, a V'eed radiator, and a short wheelbase. Mr. Compter had the car shipped to his collection in Kauri New Zealand where he and his son Dennis, and a team of restorers began a five-year restoration. It was given a re-created torpedo body built by Carrozzeria Fiat, consisting of convex flanks and a concave tail section, inlaid with steam-bent hardwood. The V'd radiator was restored by a Dutch firm and the wheels were re-created in New Zealand and fitted with unique beaded-edge tires. The body was finished in deep red, accented by black wheels, chassis, and folding top. There is matching red interior and it retains its original engine.
This particular example is the only known short-wheelbase torpedo known to exist.
