1994 Porsche 911 'Type 964' Speedster

1994 Porsche 911 'Type 964' Speedster

Representing a major step forward in the development of Porsche's long running and much loved 911 sports car, Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 versions—both codes named "964"—were launched in 1989.

The former marked the first time that all-wheel drive had been observed on a series-production 911. Porsche had experimented with a similar drive system on the 959 supercars, and many of the lessons learned there influenced the design of the 964's chassis and suspension.

Face-lifted, but retaining an instantly familiar shape, the newcomer benefited from extensive re-engineering, to the degree that Porsche claimed 87% of the 964 was entirely new, including its Type M64 engine. The 964 outperformed its predecessor, offering improved handling, stopping, acceleration, and top speed (5.4 second to 60 mph, 162 flat-out), yet easily met the latest emissions regulations.

In 1994, Porsche unveiled the new 964 Speedster, a fascinating, low-production, hardcore sports variant harkening back to the 550 and 356 Speedster of the 1950s. Today, these very special two-seaters are among the most sought-after of all modern 911 variants.
